How Modeling Is Empowering

Tuesday, January 22, 2013

So much flack gets thrown on the modeling industry these days from various corners. People throw around words like "artificial" and "unrealistic". Of course, modeling can be both of these things - but it can also be so much more than that. Modeling isn't some Barbie-perfect career, especially today. Expanded opportunities for people of all shapes, sizes and looks has made the playing field much more egalitarian and real.

Modeling is a huge source of empowerment for many girls and women. Using something that you were born with - your looks - to ensnare an audience is a great source of power. Feeling beautiful, sexy or just plain cute isn't a bad thing. Using your skills, even inherent ones, shouldn't be looked down upon. Models, just like anybody else, are career-focused and aim to use their looks and their talents to get ahead in life.

Modeling also takes a great amount of talent. It's not for everyone. Learning to pose and look good no matter what the situation are not talents that everyone has. Models need to have excellent self-awareness while still maintaining great people skills to get ahead. Physicality and personality go hand in hand in the modeling world. It's less about what you look like when you get up in the morning and more about how you look on camera or walking down the runway. It's a demanding job that requires skill and talent in a variety of different areas.

Many of today's top models aren't just silly airheads who don't know any better. Models like Tyra Banks and Gisele Bundchen have used their fame and money to help make the world a better place. Many models would continue doing the work even if they weren't getting paid. They're in a career they truly love and would likely continue to do regardless of pay level.

With a variety of different body types, shapes and sizes taking the modeling world by storm, it's not the same field it once was. Today's best models all look different. There's a place for almost anybody with determination and talent. It's a matter of leveraging those skills into a career. Models often find that they learn new skills nearly constantly, since each photo shoot is a new learning experience.

Modeling is more than just having a pretty face and "perfect" body. Today's modeling world is different from years past. Having a career as a model can be incredibly empowering for so many reasons. If you love what you do and you're good at it, what's wrong with that?
