Tips When Using Your Credit Card for Your Holiday Shopping

Wednesday, December 14, 2011

It is just a few weeks before Christmas and for sure your holiday shopping is already in full swing. Most of us use our credit card for shopping, as it is more convenient than carrying cash with us.

Though credit card offers great convenience, shoppers must also be wary when shopping using their credit card if they want to avoid debt that they can’t pay and may lead to financial stress. December can be the most expensive month for most of us as we shop for gifts for our friends, relatives, and colleagues. It is the season of giving but it does not mean that we need to overspend and break our bank.

Here are a few tips on how to use your credit card wisely as you do your holiday shopping:

1. Make a list. Before you hit the shopping malls and online stores, make sure you make a list of the people that you need to buy gifts for as well as items that you want to give to those individuals. It is important to have a list as it s very easy to be distracted with all the nice items in the stores that you might end up buying stuff even if you have no one to give it to.
2. Set a budget. Set a budget for each item that you want to buy so you will not overspend. A few hundred dollars over your set budget may seem small if you look at it individually but you will be surprise at how much it will turn out in the end after seeing your credit card bills after your shopping.
3. Be Safe and Secure. When shopping online, make sure that you use your credit card to reliable sites only. Check if they use encryption technology to avoid any hacking and fraudulent transactions.

Happy holiday shopping!
