A sad story

My grandmother has a friend who used to live in Canada. He is 80++ years old and her daughter in Canada decided to let her leave here in the Philippines because she is having a hard time living in Canada during the winter season.

But one morning I saw her in the house of our neighbor and I was surprised to find out that she is living there. Apparently, her two other children who live here in Manila can’t accommodate her at their house for reasons only they will know. Our neighbor used to work for one of her daughter and so she was asked by the daughter to take care of their mother and they will just pay her. But since my grandmother’s friend has Alzheimer’s disease, our neighbor is really having a difficult time taking care of her. And so the last time I heard, they will just send my grand mother’s friend to an elderly home.

Our family has been talking about the plight of my grand mother’s friend and we pity her. She was even telling my grand mother that nobody wants to take care of her now because she has no money. Not unlike before when she still have pension, she doesn’t have to beg or she doesn’t have to worry because all of her kids and even her grand children are attending to her needs.

After hearing her sad story, it made me and my husband realize that we really should be ready of our future. Part of our plan was to look for a cheap life insurance so we can be secured of our future and our children’s future. And then we will continue investing on real estate. This we have started already since we already bought a two door apartment. Our goal is to invest on at least five apartments so at least we will have an income when we’re retired already.

We have loved our daughter so much and if we raise her well, I know when we reached old age, I know she will really take care of us. But it would still better to take steps to make our future secure and there is now harm in starting to do that as early as now.
